The Fire men's Charitable Association of this city have been compelled to call on the public for aid. The Police Mutual Benevolent Association also appeal for assistance. The plucky successor of the deceased Tom Marshall, telegraph operator at Gre nada, is the veteran telegraph superinten dent, David Flanery, a gentleman well known and respected throughout the South. A Memphis paper gives - the naine as Fleming," which is erroneous. Mir. Fla nery has been identified with thb tele graph in New Orleans and Memphis5 all his life, and in fever,, times has constituted himself a nurse, and personally ca'd, on many occasions, for his sick and dying operators. Recently he removed to Rich mond, Va., from which place he volunta rily tendered his services whenever needed, and he was ordered to Grenada! -, New Oblba.53, Sept. 2. Two h indred and fifty-three applications to the Howard Association for relief yesterday. Members visiting the committee report a general spread of the fever; and find it encroaching upon localities heretofore measurably ex empt. The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Lusitanian, Portuguese and German Bene v olent Associations have made appeals to similar organizations tbroug bout the Union for assistance. , Ga tvESTon, Tf.x . The Houston Board of Health have issued the following : From and after the 3d day of September, 1878, no passengers, express or mails will be allowed to enter the county of Harris from beyond the State line until the 23d day of September, 1878. To-day rpened clear and warm with the force of workers nearly exhausted. The fever continues without abatement, but it is impossible to obtain the number of new cases Bp to noon for the reason that the physicians are not required to report before 5 p.m. The undertakers report forty-eight fever inter ments up to noon and the indications are that the death list will be as large as yes terday. A number of negroes some of them drunk assembled be fore the Commissary Department this morning, and, becoming riotous, made a rush for the door. They were kept back by the colored militia on guard, but a sec ond attempt being made, the guards fired, killing one negro. The doors were then closed, and General Diike E. W right spoke to the crowd, restoring 'quiet for the time being. The committee is doing all in its power to supply the people with food, but some of the negroes are dissatisfied with th& manner in which the rations are issued, and further trouble is feared. New Obleans, Sept. 2. The following is just received :' " Port Gibson, Miss., Sept. 2. To the Associated Press : There are four hundred cases and fifty five deaths out of five hundred and fifty persons remaining in town. About 1,200 have fled. The distress is very great. ' The sick are dying with no one to give them a drink of water. Some nurses are on the way from New Orleans and Chi cago. Help and tunds are needed. (Signed) James A. Gage, President Howard Association. New Orleans, Sept. 2. Two hundred and nine new cases &nd eighty -eight deaths. The weather is clear and warm. The deaths yesterday include 20 children under 7 years of age and to-day 19. The follow ing has been received from the Baton Rouge Agent of the Associated Press: 1 1 deaths from yellow fever occurred here, 4 in the last 24 hours. Many down sick and all business is stopped. Our financial resources are insufficient to relieve the distress and we are compelled to ask the country to aid us. Our people are meet ing tbe situation witn great firmness. The Relief Committee to-day ordered the distribution of $8,000 as follows : $2,500 to the Howard Association, New Orleans, with the suggestion that a portion be handed to the Peabody Association for supplies; $2,000 to Memphis; $2,000 to Vicksburg; $2,000 to the Howard Associa tion, of New Orleans," for use at other points; , The employees of the Telegrapmc Companies of tfiis city have subscribed $175 for the relief of the telegraphers suf ferine from the fever. r Providence, K. l., septemrjer a. ine -J . rw,, ' Board of Trade held to-day appointed a Committee to collect contributions for tne relief of the fever sufferers. New York. September 2. The South ern Relief Committee of the Chamber of Commerce met at noon to-day. Up to that hour subscriptions amounting to $2,29b.do were received, among them being $500 from Wm. H. Vander ailt; $500 from Wm. Astor; $200 from Gen. G. J. Magee. This makes a total amount of subscriptions to date iS44.537.12. Baltimore, Sept. 2.-fOn last Tuesday Mike Green, a negro, committed a violent assault on a young white woman in Prince George county. On the same day he was arrested and lodged in I jail at Marlboro.
